Volunteers

Why Volunteer?

Volunteers play a critical role in the Naval Horizons program. The program empowers students to picture themselves in a STEM career by designing the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps of the future. While Naval Horizons works to broaden the participation of students, we also want to broaden the participation of our Department of Navy (DON) STEM professionals who will benefit from tapping into the creativity and ideas of upcoming talent. We invite you to join us in this exciting program!

What's Involved?

Students will submit 500 to 1,500 word essays (about 1-3 pages). Volunteers will read and evaluate essays via the web application and recommend contest winners. Judging criteria is provided below.

Essay judging criteria:

  • Originality and innovation of the ideas presented. (50%)
  • Inclusion of information learned about Naval STEM research and people. (40%)
  • Quality of the essay (concise expression of ideas with appropriate grammar). (10%)

Since Naval Horizons is a virtual program, the program is administered entirely online, so evaluations can be completed from the comfort of your desk.

Who's Eligible?

Any and all Department of Navy (DON) civilians and military members are eligible to volunteer.
